an interview with Katie Brown on reDefine with Tamara Lackey

At a recent event at the Children’s Museum of the East End in the Hamptons, Tamara sat down with author and television host Katie Brown, of PBS’ The Katie Brown Workshop and Lifetime’s Next Door with Katie Brown to discusses how she created her success, what she considers when balancing motherhood and work – and exactly what she looks for when hiring commercial photographers.

Underwriter of the show, powerhouse photography retailer Adorama.com, is giving out a $25 gift card – good as cash on their site – to one of the commenters of the post.  Just share your feedback on this episode, about how to get hired for the job of your dreams … whether it’s as a TV Host or a commercial photographer.  The winner will be selected on Friday, August 19th!

  1. I love Evernote. I have been using it for about two years and switched to the paid version almost immediately. It is very easy to keep organized by just remembering to put everything into Evernote.

Using your creativity to go above and beyond is always the best way to make yourself stand out. I am constantly trying to remind myself that I’m selling MYSELF first and not my photographs. Thanks for this reminder 🙂 great episode!

  9. I use Evernote also, very useful…I always appreciate new techniques tho! Thanks for sharing! (Secretly LOVE Adorama! I have a list of things I dream of buying daily)

  10. this episode is great. When you love something you really do need to just go for it. Being a photography, military wife and mom is hard to balance but im starting to realize that the more i do the things i love, the more i can love the things i do.

  13. A love how she talks about the attitude of the photographer being as important, or more important, than the quality of the photographs. I think a lot of people miss this. If you take technically perfect photos but are a pain in the a** to deal with no one will hire you. They will hire the guy who photos may not be perfect but is a pleasure to work with.

Networking really helped me get one of my dream jobs, shooting for Hudson Valley Magazine.  Inviting them to my parties and socializing with their staff really helped get my name around their office.  Recently I shot an 8 page spread for them.

I think the most important part of getting the job you want is not necessarily giving an impression, but selling yourself. Tell the person you’re interviewing with what YOU can do for THEM — even when they ask what you’re looking for in a position, always phrase it in ways that illustrate what you want to contribute to their vision, not what you want them to do for you.

  109. Katie gives some great advice right off the bat for anyone who is out there looking for a job.  The market is very tough and you have to think outside the box and figure out how you can set yourself apart.  The people who are putting themselves out there and giving it their all are the successful ones!  Its great to be reassured that its not just about talent, but personality and attitude too.
